Santas may apply for positions via various platforms, including two websites, in-person, via phone or social media. Serious applications are given a phone, in-person, or online interview. Staff are trained to interview Santas and determine if they will be successful with a few smart questions. If they pass the phone interview, Santas are asked for various details including references, a working with children check or state equivalent, be a responsible and dependable worker, and be good with children.
After many years, Book A Santa rarely needs to recruit new performers with so many reliable and loyal performers already on our books.
Targeted Recruitment Advertising
We actively advertise across national casting networks, regional performer groups, and through specialised Christmas event communities to attract experienced Santas, Mrs. Claus, and Elf performers.
Application Screening
All applicants are carefully reviewed against strict criteria including experience, presentation, communication skills, and availability.
Interview and Selection
Shortlisted candidates are interviewed to assess personality, presentation, reliability, and fit for Myer’s customer expectations. Where applicable, previous performance references are checked.
There is something special we look for in our Santas. They should look great on paper, but also have that special sense of love for Christmas and why they want to spread Christmas joy.
All performers must:
Have received professional training as an entertainer
❖ Hold a current working with child check or state equivalent
❖ Pass all checks from Entertainment Australia
❖ Be reliable, good-natured, and punctual.
❖ Hold references stating the performer is reliable
❖ Be a fantastic performer specialising in children’s entertainment
All Santa applications are required to hold a working with children check or state equivalent for a successful interview. Regardless of the state laws, the Book A Santa policy states the Santa must hold a WWC or police check based on state regulations.
Book A Santa manages the entire process of ensuring all performers hold a WWC or equivalent and that they are up to date and valid.
Key Facts:
Recruitment commences 4–6 months prior to Christmas to ensure a fully prepared talent pool.
Over 500 performers are sourced, trained, and deployed nationally each season.
We operate to strict Health & Safety, Privacy, and Ethical standards as outlined in Myer's supplier policies.
Deployment and Ongoing Support
Performers are deployed according to location needs, supported by daily communications with our team. Performers also have a social media group where they can share experiences, ask advice and talk to other Book A Santa performers.
We also maintain a pool of backup performers to ensure coverage for unexpected absences.
All performers engaged by Book A Santa are hired on short-term contractor agreements.
This model allows us to:
Comply with all applicable workplace regulations, including performer pay, superannuation obligations, and tax requirements.
Maintain flexibility to scale staffing up or down based on campaign needs across different regions and timeframes.
Ensure high standards of performance by retaining the ability to conclude contracts promptly if conduct, availability, or performance expectations are not met.
Support a professionalised workforce by treating all performers as skilled contractors, paid above industry benchmarks and in line with the Fair Work Act requirements.
Superannuation is paid on top of agreed rates in accordance with Australian law, ensuring all Book A Santa performers, whether directly engaged or subcontracted through a trusted agency, receive full entitlements.
At Book A Santa, our strong preference is to hire performers directly wherever possible.
This direct engagement ensures clear communication, consistent training, and alignment with our operational standards and Myer’s brand expectations.
To maintain flexibility across a national campaign, in limited circumstances we may engage performers via trusted small agencies in specific regions where direct recruitment is more challenging.
When this occurs:
All subcontracted performers must meet Book A Santa’s recruitment, training, and onboarding standards.
Secondary subcontracting is not permitted.
There will never be multiple layers of agencies between Book A Santa and the individual performer.
We maintain a direct line of communication with all performers, whether contracted directly or via a trusted agency partner.
This approach ensures consistent quality control, accountability, and immediate responsiveness throughout the campaign.
